There are so many essential oil companies out there. Have you ever wondered “what are the best essential oil brands”?
In 2020 there are hundreds of brands to choose from. I hope to narrow your decision down to 9 brands, though.
Contents
First, one thing that is really sad about the essential oils industry is brands sell cheaply adulterated and synthetic essential oils. Not even the FDA can regulate the industry which leaves people with a tough choice on choosing the best brand.
Essential oils do have a lot of healing properties and can change the quality of your life. However, it can be very hard to find out which brand you should trust.
I’ve made the decision easier for you, though. I have compiled a list of the best essential oil brands in the industry.
What To Consider When Looking At Essential Oil Brands
Purity. Purity is the number one concern that you should consider before purchasing any essential oils. I remember when I first got into essential oils I made the mistake of using brands like Green Health, ArtNaturals, and Radha Beauty that were not pure.
I quickly learned that brands that sold adulterated or synthetic essential oils didn’t have any healing properties. The company should display GC/MS test on their website so that you can verify the purity of their essential oils.
It’s important that their oils are tested through a 3rd party. This is a strict quality control measure that the top essential oil brands are using in the industry.
Relationship with supplier and distiller. Each brand should be fully transparent on where they get their essential oils from. Trustworthy farms and distillers drastically affect the quality of the essential oils.
Company feedback. The aromatherapy world has a voice. Certified aromatherapist, massage therapist, bloggers, etc. all have a voice in what brands they prefer. Take note on how the long the brand has been in business and what others are saying about them online and offline.
Customer support. You should be able to contact the company easily and get your questions answered in a timely manner. Many brands will have live chat support, telephone numbers, etc. A good essential oil brand will be knowledgeable and quick to help their customers.
Price tag. Last, but certainly not least the price should be considered when choosing an essential oil brand. Depending on what your budget is can sway picking one brand over another.
If they have a rewards or loyalty program this should entice you to pick one brand over another.
Also, consider their business model. Some people are put off by an MLM business model. You have to sell their products in order to get your essential oils at a reduced price. There could be yearly or monthly fees with MLM companies, too.
Plant Therapy Essential Oils

Plant Therapy is a brand that was founded in 2011. Plant Therapy is the number one trusted brand in my opinion. They sell very high-quality essential oils at a budget-friendly price tag. They have hundreds of single essential oils, lots of synergy blends, lots of sets, roll-ons, diffusers, carrier oils, raw ingredients, and accessories.
I specifically like Plant Therapy and their rewards program. You can get discounts for purchasing their essential oils and products regularly. Always keep an eye out for their deals.
Quality Control & High Standards
Plant Therapy has some of the highest quality standards in the industry. They send their essential oils to a third party to test their oils. They are fully transparent about their testing. You can go to their website, find the bottle of essential oils, and actually check that exact batch. They publish their GC/MS test so their customers can view them.
Customer Support
The customer support with Plant Therapy is one of the most responsive support staffs I have talked with in the industry. You can talk to them via live chat through their website, during the weekday. Additionally, you can pick up the phone and call their toll free number +1-800-917-6577.
Plant Therapy does have a 90-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not happy with your purchase they will give you a full refund within 90 days of purchasing it.
Budget-friendly Prices
The prices are below what other respectable companies sell their essential oils for. They offer lots of different gift sets and the shipping is free. Also, their rewards program is awesome for saving money and you can get their products at a reduced rate.
Great Business Ethics
Overall, it’s nice to see a company in the industry that has the business ethics that Plant Therapy has. They care about the industry, sell 100% pure essential oils, have great support, and sell their products for a fair price tag.

Not to mention, Edens Garden does have a loyalty program. Your loyalty points don’t ever expire and you can get their products for a reduced price tag.
Overall, Edens Garden is an excellent brand to purchase aromatherapy products with. They have been trusted since 2009 and have some budget-friendly products for a not so premium price.

Aura Cacia Essential Oils

Aura Cacia was founded in 1976 but started bottling essential oils to local stores in 1979. If you fast-forward to the present day Aura Cacia is found in lots of whole food stores, GNC, Target, and many other stores. This unique company is member-owned and is based out of Norway, IA.

While Aura Cacia doesn’t make it publicly known that they provide GC/MS sheets on their essential oils. I have found a lab test from Dr. Robert Pappas that shows their essential oils are 100% pure. They do take a pre-shipment sample out and test it as a quality control standard.
Aura Cacia does sell organic essential oils, too. Their oils are USDA certified and sell over 130+ single oils and 28 of those are USDA certified organic.

Bulk Apothecary
Bulk Apothecary is a brand that was founded in 2011. Originally, they did not start out selling essential oils, but rather soap and candle ingredients. What I don’t understand about this company is why they aren’t as well-known in the industry because they are an awesome find! They are a very budget-friendly company and do sell high-quality essential oils.
Bulk Apothecary sells so much more than just essential oils, though. They do sell all kinds of products like bottles, raw ingredients, soaps, etc.
Organic
With each essential oil that you purchase with Bulk Apothecary, you do have an option of purchasing organic oil. Many people prefer purchasing organic essential oils over non-organic essential oils. This is a little bit more expensive than non-organic essential oils.
Bulk Apothecary does have an organic gift set which does cost under $25. You get 6 bottles of essential oil in this organic gift set.
Massive Selection
Believe me, you will be blown away by the selection they offer!

Overall, I have purchased essential oils from Bulk Apothecary in the past and was happy with them. Since their existence in 2010, I believe more and more people will discover Bulk Apothecary and do highly recommend them.

Young Living Essential Oils

Young Living was founded in 1993. Their headquarters is located in Lehi, Utah. However, they do have offices all around the world (which include Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Singapore.
It’s hard to not talk about essential oils without someone mentioning Young Living. They are currently the leader in terms of popularity in the essential oils industry.
Young Living does have an MLM business model. This means you have to sign up with them and independently sell their products to get their essential oils for a reduced rate.
Personally, I’m not crazy about their business model.
High Standards
Essential oils from Young Living are very high quality. They have a Young Living Therapeutic Grade standard. Meaning they select only the most high-quality farms, distilleries, and verify their quality standards. More information can be found with their Seed to Seal process.
Customer Care
One really positive thing I can say about Young Living is they have a lot of information on their site about using essential oils. They do have a “live chat” feature on their website. Additionally, you can always call them on their toll-free number or email them.
Price Tag
The prices of Young Living’s essential oils are on the higher end. Since they are an MLM company when you sign up with them you will get the oils at a wholesale price, though. Their starter set is $150+ which does include essential oils and a diffuser. It might be out of the price range of some.
Overall, you can’t argue that the quality of their essential oils is up there with the best of the best. However, their business model is a “turn off” for some and their prices do seem to be on the higher end.

Thanks for writing on essential oils and showing us quality brands. You are right, we have to really know our sources as there really isn’t a governing agency that regulates the quality of oils!
One thing that is very important is going organic to get a more potent herb/plant/oil but also to avoid any contaminates from pesticides that could otherwise end up in the product. Great information and shop suggestions as well.
Thank you!
Hey Suzanne,
I always try to get organic essential oils if I can. It might cost a little bit more, but it’s totally worth it. Make sure the essential oils are “USDA Certified Organic”.
I know a lot of people who have used Plant Therapy essential oils and have seen awesome results with them. Many of them are on a budget and have cited the cost-effectiveness and quality of the Plant Therapy brand time and again and are even sold in a few gyms I’ve been in and have belonged to in the past. It’s truly one of the highest quality names out there.
Hey Todd,
Good to see that you are happy with Plant Therapy and their essential oils. They are a budget-friendly company and of very high quality. Also, check out their diffusers. For example, the AromaFuse is an awesome diffuser, too.
I’ve used doTERRA for several years and I am very happy with them. I never realized how much cheaper essential oils are with Plant Therapy and Edens Garden, though. It’s like half the price of doTERRA. You have really got me interested in trying out both of those companies, now. Thanks so much for the information. Have you ever used Plant Therapy’s diffusers, though? I just looked at one on the internet and it looks really good. Lot more features from my cheap one I got off Amazon.
Hey Mr BEazzy,
You should certainly check out Plant Therapy and Edens Garden’s essential oils. Yes, I have used Plant Therapy’s diffuser. The AromaFuse is an awesome diffuser. I actually made a list of best electronic diffusers and its on there:
https://myscentedoils.com/best-essential-oil-diffusers
The timer settings are what I really like about the AromaFuse, though. 5 different timer settings and it’s much better than the cheaper ones on Amazon.
I’m confident you will be happy with it.
I found your article really helpful.
I love using essential oils, both for their curative properties and for use in a diffuser, although frequently the two can be the same thing!!
I agree, it can be difficult to know which brands to trust, so I really appreciate your advice.
I think that I prefer the sound of the Plant Therapy range, and now I will definitely be giving them a try.
Thank you so much for your help.
Chrissie 🙂
Wow! Plant Therapy really has great pricing on their oil set! I have often been approached by essential oil dealers and their products are so expensive at $30 per bottle that I just am not interested! I use essential oils a fair bit, especially lavender oils to help me to sleep, plus I just love the scent. I often use a couple of drops of lavender oil as perfume 🙂 I also use essential oils for one of my horses who has breathing issues from time to time. Does Plant Therapy allow single purchases at these same great prices to replace those from the kit that may be used up quicker than others? I am sure there will be favorites that customers use from the kits. I think their kits would be great gifts for health minded friends and family too.
Hey Madeleine,
I agree that $30 for a single essential oil is a bit overpriced. But, as I am sure you are aware purity of essential oils matters to get the healing properties that is in them.
But, to answer your question yes you can purchase essential oils singles from Plant Therapy. Their lavender one is actually one of the most popular essential oils sold. It cost under $7 and for their organic one, it cost under $12.
When you want to buy quality essential oils for your particular needs, there are some important things to keep in mind, watch out for words such as “fragrance oil,” “nature identical oil,” or “perfume oil.” These words indicate that those oils are not natural and pure essential oils.
I have used Edens Garden and NOW essential oils in the past. I am pretty happy with both of those brands. Edens Garden’s oils are better in my opinion.
Hey Bushra,
You are correct in looking out for words like “perfume oil”, “fragrance”, and “nature identical oil”. I agree that Edens Garden is better quality oils than NOW essential oils, though.
With NOW’s essential oils Dr. Robert Pappas has actually shown that one of the samples tested was adulterated.
Personally, I love Starwest Botanicals. I use lemon and grapefruit every single day. It’s my uplifting blend that I constantly have going in my diffuser.
I do love how they have a huge selection and they do sell organic essential oils. I always buy organic essential oils.
I do love their serenity blend. It’s the first thing I do when I get home from work.
Hey Frasercooper,
Lemon and grapefruit are an excellent mix. Try lemon and lime, too. That is one of my favorite blends. It’s an uplifting blend just like lemon and grapefruit.
I agree Starwest Botanicals is an awesome brand. So, glad I discovered them!
I have a suggestion for you. You should really add NOW to this list. They are one of the best in my opinion.
I’m surprised that NOW essential oils aren’t on the list. Their essential oils are priced great.
I mean really you can get 10 1 ounce essential oils for under $50. I got them last weekend on Amazon and I have been very happy with them!
Hey Padedayo,
I’ve used NOW in the past. I know they are cheap, but Dr. Robert Pappas did a GC/MS test on them and actually found that lavender was adulterated. However, the tea tree that he tested was pure. Therefore, I just use NOW essential oils for cleaning.
My wife has used Young Living for several years and we have both been happy with them. I know they are expensive, but we tried some cheap ones off eBay. I believe the companies name was Green Health or something, but they were nowhere near the quality that Young Living’s essential oils are.
I remember years ago my wife telling me about essential oils. i just went along with it because she liked them. But, I can honestly tell you a scent can actually help with mood, energy, etc.
Hey Steve,
I can personally relate to using cheap essential oils off eBay. The first ones I bought were actually essential oils by Green Health. Those essential oils don’t even compare to the ones by Young Living.
Yeah, a lot of people don’t really believe in aromatherapy until they actually try it, learn about it, etc. It really does work and can help uplift your mood, help with pain, help with depression, etc.
I love Rocky Mountain Oils with a passion! I have been buying their essential oils for 4 1/2 years now.
I like how you get free shipping with every order, customer support is very helpful and friendly, and the oils are amazing!
I use them everyday and I don’t feel the price is on the higher end, though. Their bottles are bigger meaning 15 ml verses the standard 10 ml.
Hey John,
Glad you are happy with RMO. That is a good point that their bottles are bigger. 15 ml verses 10 ml might not sound like a lot. But, that is roughly 80-85 more drops of essential oil per bottle. Got to love that!
Rose Mountain Herbs sells excellent essential oils. I always get my essential oils from them. I like how they sell organic essential oils. Also, their customer support is top notch. They are always so helpful and always answer any questions I might have.
We have a friend whose sister works as a chemist for doTerra. According to her, they use synthetic materials in their oils. (I am a certified herbalist and have been using essential oils for 20 years)
