Mountain Rose Herbs Essential Oils Reviews

So, you’re interested in trying out Mountain Rose Herbs? There are lots of essential oil reviews online, but few go into as much depth about their essential oils as I do.

First, let me tell you a little bit about the company.

Mountain Rose Herbs was founded in 1987. Rose Gladstar founded the company and in the beginning, she wanted to supply her students at the California School of Herbal Studies. Shortly after that, she moved to Vermont. Then Mountain Rose Herbs was a small retail shop and also a mail order company.

In 1981 Mrs. Gladstar sought out help from her friend Julie Bailey who taught people about herbs and had a was an advent gardener and enjoyed the wilderness. In 1991 Julie purchased the company from Rose. Julie ran Mountain Rose Herbs out her home in California. She created many product lines of teas, aroma sprays, face creams, and oils.

Mountain Rose Herbs ReviewsIn 1999 Shawn Donnie was promoted to management and this is when things really took off for Mountain Rose Herbs. He established a “strictly organic” policy and received an organic certification. In 2001 Shawn and Julie become co-owners.

If you fast forward to the present day Mountain Rose Herbs is one of the most well trusted and established brands in the industry.  In this full review, I am going to show you why they are so highly regarded in the industry.

Mountain Rose Herbs Awards & Certifications

Mountain Rose Herbs Awards

MRH is in the GreenPower program. They use renewable energy sources (solar power) instead of electrical powered electricity.

They were voted as one of the best Green Businesses To Work For In Oregon. They have a non-GMO project certification. Here is a full list of credentials and awards which you can check out for yourself: https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/about/certified-organic/

Mountain Rose Herbs Purity

Essential oils need to be pure. Otherwise, they are really just fragrances which don’t really hold any health benefits. Sadly, the industry is plagued with greedy people that will print anything on a bottle and sell it for cheap. They then try to pass it off as a pure essential oil (click here to learn more). Case and point, just search on Amazon and you will see all kinds of companies selling “pure” essential oils when they are not actually pure. I have exposed several of those companies already (see my reviews Green Health, Radha Beauty, ArtNaturals).

So, are Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils really pure? The short answer is yes.

Unlike a lot of other companies, MRH does not publish its GC/MS test on their website. A GC/MS test is a test that shows all the constituents that are found in a bottle of essential oil. For instance, peppermint would contain Menthol, Menthone, Menthyl acetate, Neomenthol, 1,8-Cineole, Menthofuran and other chemical compounds in it.

MRH does have GC/MS test available upon request, though.  I did email Mountain Rose Herbs asking for proof of a GC/MS test for peppermint.  I did get a response and a GC/MS test.  It did pass with flying colors.  However, Mountain Rose Herbs asked me not to post a screenshot of the results on my website.

Certified Organic

A lot of people that purchase essential oils prefer to buy organic essential oils. The reason being is because they are free of pesticides and other contaminants that might be in the essential oil. Mountain Rose Herbs does have one of the largest certified organic essential oil product lines.

They have a credo which is “People and Planet before Profit”. Some brands in the industry purchase their raw ingredients to make essential oils from just any farmer who can provide them with the ingredients needed to make essential oil. MRH does purchase their ingredients from reputable essential oil farmers and uses state of the art distillers.

Mountain Rose Herbs Products

Mountain Rose Herbs does offer a number of different products. They offer herbs, spices, raw ingredients, health tonics, elixirs, capsules, bath products, massage oils, salves, containers, and essential oils.

MRH does offer over 110+ essential oils. The only synergy that they offer is chakra blends.

When browsing their website Mountain Rose Herbs does print out the part of the plant used, extraction method, note classification (top, middle, or base note), aroma, an overview of the essential oil. For instance, Juniper is used to purify the air, packaging information, what it blends well with, herbal miscellany, and precautions.

Essential Oil Kits & Samples

It’s good to be able to purchase kits so you can try out essential oils and also get them for a reduced rate. They do offer 3 kits.

The first one is called the “Aphrodite Essential Oils Kit”. Mountain Rose Herbs refers to it as their “Lovers Essential Oil Kit”. The oils that are included in this set create feelings of love, attraction, and passion.

Mountain Rose Herbs Prices

The price tag of any product we purchase is always a factor. As I have learned in the past cheaper essential oil companies are not worth the extremely low price tag. Here is a look at how their essential oils compare to others in the industry:

The below tested essential oils are for the essential oil grapefruit.
Mountain Rose Herbs (15ml)$11.00
Plant Therapy (10ml)$11.95
Eden's Garden (10ml)$8.95
Aura Cacia (15ml)$8.97
doTERRA (15ml)$24.00
Young Living (15ml)$22.70

Do keep in my the shipping which is not included in the above prices. I will talk about shipping next.

Shipping

One of the downsides to Mountain Rose Herbs is the high shipping cost. Well, let me clarify because it’s going to take some explaining. If you are purchasing just a few or one single bottle of essential oil it’s going to be rather expensive for shipping.

See this screenshot down below to see what I am talking about:

Mountain Rose Herbs Shipping

Here is what Mountain Rose Herbs told me about the high shipping price:

“Thank you for your email and for sharing your concerns about our shipping prices. I completely understand your concerns, especially where there is such a discrepancy between the cost of shipping the product being ordered and the cost of the item itself.

Unfortunately, due to increased restrictions by the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) we are not able to ship Class 3 flammable substances through USPS Priority mail. These materials include the bulk of our essential oil line as well as our elixirs and syrups. This is why you only see UPS Ground or UPS Air Expedites as shipping options when checking out.

With each carrier, the first pound will always be the most expensive; ground services through UPS are geared more towards larger orders and so the cost becomes more economical the heavier the order. With lighter packages handled by this carrier, you will still see a base charge of $10-$15 for orders 3-4 pounds and lighter.

The estimated shipping rate for your order is calculated directly from UPS or the Postal Service based on the weight, and distance of delivering your package, and with consideration of shipping restrictions. We have maintained the lowest possible prices for our products and continue to lower our prices whenever we can, but rather than subsidizing the cost of the shipping within our product pricing and offering free or reduced shipping rates, we opt for a more transparent pricing system.

We simply charge shipping cost specific to the weight of the given order and the distance that it will travel, as these carriers do, and charge the cost of our product separately. We do offer a generous bulk discount, which can help lower your total expenses when you buy in bulk. As I mentioned, with any shipping option, the first pound is the most expensive, so we recommend placing larger orders if possible (maybe with friends and family) to get more out of your shipping costs.

This suggestion sounds like it might not be helpful for you this time, but perhaps it will be helpful in the future should you try us out again. Many companies have incorporated shipping increases into their product costs, essentially raising prices for their customers. We hope that lowering our prices and increasing other services like great customer service and high-quality organic products will help balance out the shipping.” So, make sure if you are going to order essential oils from them that you at least an order over 1 pound. However, these essential oils can be shipped USPS (which still does cost $8+ for shipping):

  • Allspice
  • Amyris
  • Anise Seed
  • Cardamom
  • Catnip
  • Atlas Cedarwood
  • Virginia Cedarwood
  • Clove Bud
  • Copaiba Balsam
  • Davana
  • Ginger (Dried)
  • Manuka
  • Myrrh
  • Oakmoss Absolute
  • Oakwood Absolute
  • Palmarosa
  • Palo Santo
  • Patchouli
  • Peru Balsam
  • Poplar Bud Absolute
  • Sandalwood
  • Vetiver

Mountain Rose Herbs Customer Support

You can contact them at 1-800-879-3337 Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Pacific time. Also, you can email support anytime with your questions or concerns. I have reviewed dozens of essential oil companies. Personally, I have a lot of experience talking back and forth with support from various companies.

But, I was blown away by the quality of customer care with MRH. Meaning, when I was in the process of writing this review I had a couple of questions. I did abandon my cart prior to checking out. I have used them in the past, but I was very impressed with the amount of time customer support took with me since I did not complete my purchase.

Returns

MRH does allow you to return products and doesn’t charge a restocking fee, doesn’t require a return authorization form, and you do have 60 days to return your merchandise.

Mountain Rose Herbs Final Thoughts

So, do I recommend Mountain Rose Herbs?

Yes!

They are a well-known name in the industry.  Rose Mountain Herbs can certainly be trusted! They have a passion for selling quality essential oils and other items like teas, spices, butters, waxes, containers, etc. They have 30+ years in the industry and highly regarded as one of the best brands to buy essential oils from.

Personally, I love their selection of organic essential oils. I am very happy with the quality of their oils, too. I really am a big fan of their customer support. But, their prices are kind of high (with shipping) if you order one of two single oils at a time. So, I would encourage you to stock up when you buy from Rose Mountain Herbs.

  1. Rose Mountain Herbs is one of the first essential oils companies I have ever tried. Their oils are top notch! I am so glad that I found them years ago!

But, also they are a good place to buy bulk herbs. I know that when you buy their herbs in bulk you do get a discount. For instance, 10% for 5-9 lbs, 15% 10-24 lbs, and 25% for 25 lbs and over.

    Highly recommended!

    1. Hey Ayodeji,

Glad you are happy with their essential oils!

Thanks for your feedback and your information on getting a discount when buying herbs with Rose Mountain Herbs.

  2. I buy their oils when I need them. They seem to be the best on the market. My favorite is Bergomot. I can put a drop or two in my tea. I always order online because the one health food store we have in town doesn’t carry this brand.  I highly recommend the brand.

I know what you are saying about the shipping, though.  This is why I stock up when I buy from Mountain Rose Herbs.

    1. Hey Marsha & Mike,

Rose Mountain Herbs really are high-quality essential oils.

Personally, I do like bergamot a lot. I actually don’t think they sell their products at all in the stores. But, don’t quote me on that because I could be wrong on that.

Shipping is a little high, but I agree it’s best to stock up.

  3. Do you mean that all Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils are pure?  I have used ArtNaturals in the past and just got a headache. I guess it’s safe to say that you are paying for quality, though. You wrote that Mountain Rose Herbs essential oils does allow you to return products and doesn’t charge a restocking fee wow, this is a nice return policy, I love that. I’ll surely recommend it.

Also, do you know about nebulizers?  I have heard they are better than diffusers.

    Do they ship internationally?
