I got to be perfectly honest I can’t really understand why there are not more Starwest Botanicals essential oil reviews published on the internet!
I have purchased their essential oils and have been very happy with them. But, first I am going to teach you a little bit about the company.
Starwest Botanicals was founded in 1975. They are headquartered out of Sacramento, CA. Van Joerger started the company in 1975 as a small herbs shop. In just 4 years, Van built a proprietary herb shop that aimed to have better control over the processing of herbs.
In the fifth year, Van started importing herbs from several different countries. If you fast-forward to the modern day Starwest Botanicals is one of the biggest organic herbs suppliers.
They have some of the highest quality essential oils in the industry. I have read countless books and at the end of a lot of them, they always recommend Starwest Botanicals.
Now, in the most comprehensive Starwest Botanicals review you will ever read online I am going to show you why they are an excellent online shop to buy your essential oils from.

Starwest Botanicals Bottle
For example, I am going to show you a bottle of peppermint essential oils I bought from them.
On the front of the bottle, you will see a picture of their logo and a cartoon lady who is smelling a rose.
Then the words peppermint are printed under that with the Latin name “Mentha piperita”.
On the side, you will see 10 mL 1/3 fl. oz. Then, you will see a lot number, expiration date, a barcode, mailing address, and a link to their website www.starwest-botanicals.com.
Then you will see a warning label that tells you to keep out of the reach of children, dilute the oil with a carrier oil, keep it away from your eyes, and avoid contact with mucous membranes. Lastly, not to use it if you’re pregnant.
Starwest Botanicals Purity Test
It’s very important that you are using pure essential oils. I have written about the purity of essential oils which you can check out here. Nowhere on the bottle are the words “therapeutic grade”, “100% pure” or anything to that nature printed on their bottles. Just in case you didn’t know the industry isn’t regulated very well so companies can print the words “pure” on essential oil bottles even when they are not really pure!
One thing that a lot of people really don’t realize about essential oils is if you use synthetic ones, or adulterated ones there are no medicinal benefits that come from it. Also, they can actually be dangerous to your health because they commonly contain carcinogenic properties.
In-House Laboratory
It’s important to have some quality control measures if you’re in the essential oils industry. Thankfully, Starwest Botanicals does test their raw materials when they receive it. Along with that, they do test their essential oils when the product is finished and ready to sell, too.
Starwest Botanicals does conduct a high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) test on their essential oils. They do have an in-house quality control laboratory.
I was unable to locate any test reports of their oils on their website or at any other third-party websites. A lot of companies are fully transparent about the chemicals that are found in their oils. Sadly, Starwest Botanicals isn’t as transparent as other companies.
I can assure you that the essential oils you get from Starwest Botanicals are pure, though. They have a great footprint in the industry since 1975, and I have no reason to believe that their oils are adulterated or synthetic.
Organic Essential Oils
It’s always nice to be able to purchase essential oils that are organic. Organic essential oils are “USDA Certified”, which is displayed on a bottle of organic oil.
When writing this Starwest Botanicals review I found out that 32 of their essential oils are certified organic.
Starwest Botanicals Smell Test
I remember the first day I ever tried Starwest Botanicals essential oils. The first oil I ever used from them was lavender. I use lavender and vetiver to help me sleep at night. See this article on sleeping issues and essential oils.
But, anyways I put 8 drops in my URPOWER diffuser. Typically, I put in 12-20 drops since it’s a 500 mL diffuser.
I instantly noticed the aroma which was of excellent quality. I’ve used cheap adulterated oils before and this certainly wasn’t one of them.
The next day I used lemon and lime in my InnoGear diffuser and was also impressed with the quality of their essential oils. The quality is certainly up there with Rocky Mountain Oils!
However, I did discover that nebulizers are the best way to diffuse essential oils. The essential oil will stay in the air for up to 70 minutes even after turning it off. Furthermore, I do use them in my nebulizer nearly every single day. My number one recommended nebulizer is the Advanced Aromatherapy Essential Oil Diffuser (see review).
Can You Use Starwest Botanicals Oils Internally
I sent Starwest Botanicals a message about their stance on ingesting essential oils. Here is what Dora Horton said:
“Our 100% pure essential oils are food grade quality and can be used for food and drink recipes provided they are all diluted or blended properly and are from an herb that is safe to use for internal purposes.
Our essential oils will all read, “External Use Only” on the label because essential oils are volatile and can burn if ingested directly (some even burn when used externally). Extreme caution is advised when using essential oils, either internally or externally.
We would like to be helpful but we are not able to advise on proper dilution methods. We recommend seeking the advice of an herbalist or qualified aromatherapist practitioner. Please be sure to use due diligence in gaining the proper education before using ANY essential oils internally.”
Starwest Botanicals Products
Starwest Botanicals does offer a variety of single essential oils and blends. Below I am going to discuss them.
Single Essential Oils
Starwest Botanicals does offer over 75+ different single essential oils. What I like about their single blends is you can get different options with their single oils. Meaning, they come in 1/3 fl. oz., 4 oz., and 16 oz. Some of their more expensive essential oils singles come in 1/6 fl oz, too. According to AromaHQ.com, they do offer more essential oils than doTERRA.
Essential Oils Blends
Starwest Botanicals does offer 6 different blends. Their bottles are available in 1/3 oz (10 mL) and 4 oz bottles. Down below I am going to give you more details about each blend:
- BodyCalm. It’s a very calming scent that includes lavender, geranium, and clary sage. It’s a good blend to help reduce stress and calm the mind.
- BreatheFree. It’s a healing blend which helps soothe your sinuses. It includes eucalyptus, lavender, spruce, white camphor, and Virginiana cedarwood.
- NewSelf. This blend is an uplifting and stimulating blend. It contains lemon, geranium, grapefruit, juniper berry, helichrysum, and rose.
- Radiance. It’s a stimulating, welcoming, and warm blend. This blend contains sweet orange, clove bud, nutmeg, and cassia.
- Revitalize. This is an uplifting blend that gives your brain an extra added mental boost. It contains lemon, rosemary, peppermint, and sweet basil.
- Serenity. It’s a calming and relaxing blend. It contains sweet orange, lavender, wild marjoram, and German chamomile. (personally, it’s one of my favorites).
Additionally, they do sell bulk herbs and spices, bulk tea, herbal capsules, herbal extracts, natural body care, and a plethora of accessories.
Starwest Customer Support
Customer support is always one important part of any business. If you are new to aromatherapy and essential oils you are going to have lots of questions.
There are various ways to get in contact with Starwest Botanicals. You can reach them on the telephone 1-800-4372 (toll-free), or 1-916-638-8100 (internationally). They do have business hours which are 8 AM to 4:30 PM PST (Monday through Friday). Also, you can contact them through their contact page.
Starwest Botanicals does have a 100% money-back guarantee. You can get a full refund within 60 days if you are unhappy with your products. You can either get a 100% refund or credit. You can’t return items that are close-out items, though.
Starwest Botanicals Price
The price is always a factor to consider when purchasing essential oils. Don’t make the mistake of just going with the cheapest brands for essential oils. I have already made this perfectly clear in my ArtNaturals, Radha Beauty, and Green Health reviews. But, here is a look at how Starwest Botanicals compares to other popular brands in the industry:
Starwest Botanicals Price Comparison
The below tested essential oils are for the essential oil tea tree.Starwest Botanicals (10ml) | $6.50 |
---|---|
Aura Cacia (10ml) | $8.99 |
Plant Therapy (10ml) | $7.55 |
Edens Garden (10ml) | $10.45 |
doTERRA (15ml) | $24.95 |
Young Living (15ml) | $33.95 |
Starwest Botanicals Final Thoughts
Do I recommend Starwest Botanicals! Yes, and that is with an exclamation point! It’s hard not to recommend a company that has been in business since 1975. They care about providing quality essential oils for a budget-friendly price.
Starwest Botanicals is certainly one of the “good guys” in the industry and I have been very happy with them.
They have a strict quality control process. Even though they don’t do third-party testing and don’t have any kind of loyalty program I am confident in recommending them.
Again, I have tried and tested them out and was very happy with their essential oils.
Their customer support is very good, they offer organic oils, 6 different blends, and the number of accessories they offer is amazing!
Lastly, you get free shipping for orders that are over $75.
Please if you have any experience with their essential oils or questions that are not addressed in this Starwest Botanicals review leave a comment down below.

Shipping is more expensive with them! I mean it cost $10 to ship one bottle of essential oil. I think this is a little crazy! but I am happy with them; I would just suggest that you make an order that is over $75 so you can get free shipping.
But overall I am very happy with them and the quality is certainly their. I do like them better than my old brand Which was Young Living.
Hey Niesha,
Good to see you like them better than Young Living.
I do agree that shipping is more expensive with Starwest Botanicals. Other essential oil companies will allow free shipping with their orders. However, Starwest Botanicals does not for smaller orders.
I’m glad to see you are happy with your essential oils, though.
I have used them for herbal tea and spices. But my wife does like them for a essential oils. She has worned me that there are a lot of shady companies out there.
It’s a shame that the industry is not regulated well – anyone can put the words pure on bottle and sell is so misleading. In fact it is cruel. The things people will do for money these days.
Thank you for bringing light to this trusted company.
Hey Choannah,
I did try their herbal teas the other day. I can say I was really happy with them. The peppermint one was awesome!
Your wife is correct; there are a lot of shady essential oil companies out there. Thankfully, Starwest Botanicals isn’t one of them.
I received a gift of Starwest Botanicals a few years ago and I have been using it ever since, I love the massage oils and the infused herbal oils. My daughter love to buy these kind of things as gifts so she make sure I never run out.
I do regret that there are no gift sets though. Nevertheless, they can still be put together and presented in a gift basket. These are definitely goods quality products. Thanks for the post.
V. Pearl
Hey Vanna,
I haven’t ever used their massage oils or infused herbal oils. However, I am interested to try out their massage oils.
Thanks for your feedback and I do agree with you that I wish they offered gift sets. However, I guess you can piece them together, though.
A lot of good information about starwest, and a ringing endorsement from you. Any company that will include a 60 day money back guarantee must be incredibly confidant in their product and that confidence really comes across in your review. Its a good feeling to know that you can trust the product you are purchasing. Thanks for the article.
Hey Mike,
The 60-day money-back guarantee is certainly a strong point with Starwest Botanicals. They are an awesome company and I am happy to write them up a positive review.
I have tried out so many other companies essential oil‘s. However about a month ago I found Starwest botanicals on Amazon. I tried out their lavender. Since then I bought three or four more orders from them. Also use their herbs and spices to cook with. So glad I found them !
Very happy customer !
Hey Alisha,
Glad you are happy with Starwest Botanicals. Thanks for sharing your feedback on them.
My mother has always been into essential oils. I on the other hand have never really bothered to learn more about its uses and benefits. There are so many essential oil companies out there though. I have heard you can use them for pain. Is this true? How do you use them for pain? Do you just diffuse them?
I hope to give starwest botanicals essential oils a try.
Hey Eohia,
There certainly are a lot of different essential oil companies out there! No, you don’t diffuse oils for pain relief. For pain, you want to use essential oils topically. You don’t want to just put the essential oils on your skin without a carrier oil. This could cause some skin problems. Always use a carrier oil. I have actually written an article on pain and essential oils which you can check out here:

Hi there,
Thank you for such a thorough write up on Starwest Botanicals. Essential oils have been all the rage this year in the health industry and, admittedly I haven’t understood why. Your review has taught me a lot about essential oils and I may have to give them a try. I would not have known to look for carcinogens and toxic chemicals like that had you not taken the time to bring awareness to it, so I definitely appreciate that.
I think I am going to purchase them from Starwest Botanicals.
Hey Kris,
Try them out and let me know what you think.
Starwest Botanicals does sell pure essential oils and I am confident that you will be happy with them. What a lot of people don’t understand is that adulterated essential oils or synthetic essential oils can contain carcinogens in them.
I did recently read an article at: https://tisserandinstitute.org/learn-more/carcinogenic-essential-oils/
It stated that rose, elemi, and holy basil can contain a very small amount of carcinogens in them, though.
In the past I have just used doTERRA. I’ve been very happy with them, but lately I have been noticing there are a lot of cheaper essential oil brands. I was considering changing or at least testing them out. I don’t really like the MLM business model that doTERRA has.
It looks like Starwest Botanicals isn’t a MLM, right? I actually hadn’t ever heard of Starwest Botanicals. They are not as well known as doTERRA are they?
Hey Julienne,
Don’t get me wrong doTERRA is a great company, but the price can be a deciding factor for many people. No Starwest Botanicals is not an MLM company. A lot of people don’t know about Starwest Botanicals compared to Young Living and doTERRA. However, they are a very high-quality brand of essential oils. They also sell herbs and aromatherapy ingredients, too.
Check them out for yourself!
I have to admit that I just switched from doTERRA to Starwest Botanicals and I really can’t understand why I didn’t make the switch before I did earlier.
Their essential oils are every bit as pure as doTERRA. However, I can say that they don’t offer to many ultrasonic diffusers, though.
Do you happen to have any recommendations?
Good to see that you switched from doTERRA to Starwest Botanicals. They really are a great company and I can personally attest to the purity of their essential oils.
I know what you are saying about diffusers, though. Starwest Botanicals really doesn’t offer a lot of diffusers. You are in luck because I have compiled a list of the top diffusers in the industry: https://myscentedoils.com/best-essential-oil-diffusers
Also, you might want to try out a nebulizer. I made the switch to nebulizers and really prefer them over diffusers. I have also compiled a list of the best nebulizers in the industry: https://myscentedoils.com/best-essential-oil-nebulizer
