The Thieves blend which was trademarked by Young Living is an awesome blend that I absolutely love.
Contents
Meaning that if you buy it from Young Living it’s going to cost you $35 for a 15 ml bottle. That is an outrageous price tag for a 15 ml bottle of essential oil in my opinion!
So, in this article, I am going to show you how to make your own using essential oils from NOW, Plant Therapy, Aura Cacia, and Plant Guru. Really, I don’t mind which company that you use, but you need to make sure they are pure essential oils (click here to read more about finding out the purity of essential oils). Also, I can show you some similar synergies if you don’t want to mix your own.
A couple companies I have reviewed that sell adulterated essential oils are Green Health, ArtNaturals, and Radha Beauty. So, I would highly recommend avoiding them altogether.
Thieves Essential Oil Recipe:
- 40 drops of Clove Bud
- 35 drops of Lemon
- 20 drops of Cinnamon Bark
- 15 drops of Eucalyptus
- 10 drops of Rosemary
This will make 120 drops of the Thieves blend which you should use a 15 ml dark amber glass bottle. I like to clean out my old essential oil bottles for my synergies that I make. See this article to find out how you should clean out your essential oil bottles that you have already used.
Quick History On Thieves
Ok so here is a quick history lesson on Thieves essential oil. In the 15th century, there were French thieves who created their own blend to keep them well. These thieves would rob the dead or people that were dying. The problem with this is that people that are dead or dying have diseases and illnesses. So, to make a long story short the Thieves blend was used to keep them well.
Young Living Thieves Alternatives
Some people don’t like to mix their own blends as I showed you above. Instead, they want an option that is already mixed together. Well, you are in luck because there are several companies that sell Young Living Thieves blends. They contain the same essential oils in the Thieves synergy, but since the term “Thieves” is trademarked they can’t legally print the name “Thieves” on it.
Germ Fighter
This is Plant Therapy’s version of the synergy. It contains lemon, clove, eucalyptus, rosemary, and cinnamon cassia. The only difference is it uses Ceylon cinnamon (instead of cinnamon bark) which is less expensive. You can read the difference between cinnamon bark and cinnamon Ceylon here.
This is a much better way to go because it’s cheaper than buying from Young Living. Plant Therapy is a much cheaper brand than Young Living and does have an awesome loyalty program, too. However, just because they are cheaper doesn’t make them inferior to Young Living, though.
From my experience, this synergy smells exactly like Young Living’s Thieve’s blend.
Immune Strength
This is Rocky Mountain Oils version of the synergy. Rather than just using the 5 essential oils that go in the Thieves synergy it contains more essential oils. Here is what is in “Immune Strength”:
- Clove Bud.
- Cinnamon Bark.
- Lemon.
- Orange.
- Oregano.
- Mandarin.
- Thyme.
- Rosemary.
- Nutmeg.
- Ginger root.
- Eucalyptus.
Overall, I am very happy with this synergy by Rocky Mountain Oils. What I like about it is it contains three essential oils that I feel are a “powerhouse” which are oregano, thyme, and ginger root.
If you’re interested in learning more about Rocky Mountain Oils you can see my full review of them here.
Fighting Five Blend
This is Edens Gardens’ version of Thieves. It has the same 5 essential oils in it which are cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary. Like Plant Therapy Edens Garden is another cheaper brand.
However, this synergy uses more eucalyptus in it. Instead of having that powerful clove and cinnamon note there is more of a prominent eucalyptus smell in this synergy.
This synergy is also thinner than Thieves. However, I do like it and you can’t argue with that fact that you are paying less than half the price as Thieves from Young Living.
Edens Garden made my list as “Best Essential Oil Brands“, too. You can check out my full Edens Garden review here.
Thieves Essential Oil Benefits
So, hopefully, your not looking to rob dying people or the dead. But, if you are planning to rob the dying or graves of people I do want half. But seriously, here are some of the benefits of Thieves essential oil:
Fortifies Immune System
The ingredients that are in Thieves essential oil are packed with antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. Therefore, it’s going to help keep you from getting sick.
In the 15th century, these grave robbers would rob the dead and the plague was a real health concern. Therefore, the Thieves blend protected their body from getting any sort of infections or diseases.
It’s recommended that you use the Thieves blend 2-3 times a day. You can diffuse it throughout the day, make a roll-on and apply it to your wrist, chest, temples, hands, etc. You can diffuse it around your kids to keep them from getting sick throughout the school year. If you are new to diffuser check out this article, which will explain it to you.
I hope I have made it perfectly clear that the Thieves blend helps fortify your immune system.
Reduces Fever
There are a lot of ways to reduce a fever. For instance, doctors will recommend you take acetaminophen and ibuprofen. They always advise you to get plenty of sleep and stay hydrated.
But, did you know that clove and lemon have properties in them that can reduce your fevers and reduce the levels of free radical activity in your body? Also, rosemary essential oil is used to relieve joint disorders, inflammation, and relieves pain (click here to read my article on essential oils and pain).
Improves Respiratory Health
There are a number of essential oils that are good for helping you get over a cold. For instance, two of them eucalyptus and cinnamon essential oil are useful in relieving respiratory disorders. Both of those oils have strong antibacterial properties. Both of them are expectorants. This means they help your body break up phlegm and mucus. Lastly, clove essential oil is in the Thieves blend and clove can soothe inflammation in your throat.
Disinfectant
All the properties that are in the Thieves blend have antiviral, antibacterial, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties in them. When they are combined together they are great for killing germs. You can apply Thieves with aloe vera gel to help heal minor wounds and cuts quicker.
Improves Digestion
Both rosemary and clove have been shown to be beneficial to the digestive system. Both help with bloating, constipation, and cramping. Additionally, they both increase the bacteria balance in your gut. This helps to make sure your nutrient uptake is operating efficiently. Lemon has also been used to help with indigestion.
Weight Loss
When people think of essential oils they don’t usually think of them as a weight loss aid. However, lemon essential oil (one of the ingredients) in the Thieves blend can stimulate the release of hormones which will signal the body to think it’s full. Also, the properties that in the Thieves blend can increase your metabolism, which is an extra added benefit to losing weight.
Skin Care
Again the properties that are in the Thieves blend are good for your skin. Meaning, lemon, and eucalyptus have strong antiseptic and disinfectant properties in them. You can apply them to your skin with jojoba or coconut oil which has been shown to help skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Just make sure you use a 1% dilution with the Thieves blend because two of the oils in the blend are known as dermal irritants.
Improves Bone Health
Really, people don’t typically think of Thieves as being a bone health essential oil. But, clove essential oil is a stimulate that allows your body to absorb minerals. This leads to healthier bones and decreases your chance of developing osteoporosis.
How To Use Thieves Essential Oil Blend
The Thieves blend is some powerful stuff.
Typically when using essential oils aromatherapist will encourage you to use a 3-5% dilution. Please see my guide to carrier oils and essential oils for information about mixing them (click here). However, with Thieves, I recommend doing a 1% dilution because clove and cinnamon can cause dermal irritation.
Hand Wash
You can add the Thieves blend to your hand soap.
For instance, you can use your favorite store-bought hand soap and add some drops of the Thieves essential oil blend to it. So, if you have an 8 oz bottle of handsoap add 48 drops of your thieves blend to it.
Homemade Hand Soap With Thieves Blend:
- 2 Tablespoons of liquid Castile Soap (Recommend Dr. Bronners)
- 1 Tablespoon of coconut carrier oil.
- 1 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil.
- Distilled or filtered water.
- 8 oz glass container.
- 48 drops of the Thieves blend.
Put the castile soap in first. Then add the essential oils. Add your coconut carrier oil and Vitamin E. Then fill the rest of the bottle with distilled or filtered water. Make sure you shake really good. Each time you use the soap I would shake it for 3-5 seconds.
Homemade Deodorant
You can make your own homemade deodorant. Then, you can apply your deodorant like you would your store-bought deodorant.
Here is a homemade deodorant recipe:
- 3 Tablespoons Unrefined Coconut Oil
- 2 Tablespoons Shea Butter
- 3 Tablespoons of Baking Soda
- 2 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
- 15 Drops of Thieves Essential Oil
Melt the shea butter and coconut in a double boiler. Turn off heat and add baking soda and arrowroot. Add in Thieves essential oil. Stir for about 45 seconds. Store in a mason jar and let it harden. This makes about 150 ml of all natural deodorant.
Toothpaste
You can put a drop or two in your toothpaste and brush your teeth with the Thieves blend.
Here is a homemade toothpaste recipe:
- 3 Tablespoons of bentonite clay powder.
- 2 Tablespoons of coconut oil (liquid state).
- 1 teaspoon of ground stevia (green no white).
- 3/4 teaspoon of unrefined high mineral salt.
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
- 3 Tablespoons of distilled water.
- 1/4 teaspoon of the Thieves blend.
Mix the contents in a glass bowl. Then pour into a BPA-free squeezable tube. Use it 3-4 times per week.
Dishwasher Cleaner
The simplest way to use Thieves is by adding 2-3 drops of Thieves to your automatic dishwasher brand that you use. However, if you want to go completely “all natural” you can use this recipe:
- 2 oz Washing Soda
- 3 1/4 Cups Water
- 4 oz White Vinegar
- 1 oz Citric Acid Powder
- 1 Cups Kosher Salt
- 40 drops of Thieves blend
Mix the contents together at least in a 48oz bottle. You can use old bottles that you have used for your automatic dishwasher. Use about 1 to 2 tablespoons per load. Make sure you shake the bottle before using it.
Kill Airborne Germs
The Thieves blend is excellent for diffusing in your house. The properties that are in the trademarked blend are great for killing airborne germs. I use both the InnoGear 150 ml and URPOWER 500 ml to diffuse my essential oils.
Also, you can use a tea light diffuser if you want to get the blend into the air, too. You can pick a cheap one up at the thrift store or purchase one on Amazon here.
Homemade Cleaner
You can make your own household multi-purpose cleaner. Here is a simple recipe:
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups white vinegar
- 1 teaspoon natural dish soap
- 50 drops of Thieves blend
Put the water and vinegar in first. Then add in 50 drops of the Thieves blend. Then add 1 teaspoon of natural dish soap. Shake before using.
I highly recommend you check out my cleaning with essential oils guide if you are looking for more great recipes to clean with.
Roll-On & Lotion
You can make a roll-on and rub it on your hands, wrist, and chest two times a day.
Here is a simple recipe for Thieves roll-ons:
- 15 ml of carrier oil (recommend coconut oil, jojoba, or grapeseed)
- 6 drops of the Thieves blend
Here is a simple recipe for Thieves lotion:
- 5 oz Shea Butter
- 2 oz almond or grapeseed carrier oil
- 2 oz coconut oil (solid form)
- 48 drops of the Thieves blend
Melt the shea butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. Add 2 oz of almond or grapeseed carrier oil. Pour into a glass bottle. Add 48 drops of the Thieves blend. Shake it for 20 seconds. Wait for it to cool down and apply it to your skin 1-2 times a day.
Sore Throat
Mix 1 drop with one tablespoon of mouthwash and gargle for 20-30 seconds. Use it 1-3 times a day.
Clean Laundry
You can add a couple drops of Thieves essential oil to your store-bought laundry detergent. However, you can easily make your own all natural laundry detergent
- 2.5 Cups Liquid Castile Soap
- 1/4 Cup White Vinegar
- 1 Tbsp Vegetable Glycerin
- 3/4 Cups Water
- 15 Drops Thieves Blend
Use like you with your store-bought laundry detergent. This recipe will make 24 oz of laundry detergent. Make sure you shake it before pouring it into your laundry.
Final Thoughts
As you can see the Thieves blend is some powerful stuff.
You don’t have to buy it from Young Living. The above recipe shows you how to make it on your own. Then you can use it to improve your health. The benefits of this blend are amazing. It should drastically reduce your risk of getting sick.

Great recipe! I’ve used similar blends from different companies, but you’re right, they’re so expensive! I definitely would rather make my own and it looks really simple. Plus, I imagine you could just make more if you need it, so you buy the bottles, then make a few bottles of your own thieves oil. Love it!
Hey Genesis,
Yes, there are all kinds of similar blends from various other essential oil companies. However, I absolutely love the Thieves blend for building immunity and getting through the colder months. The problem with when it’s colder is we change the way we live. Meaning, we all run indoors, breath recycled air, and cough and sneeze.
People get sick so much more in the winter months and Thieves can really help you from getting sick. I love the roll on and diffusing it to help kill airborne germs.
I never knew that essential oils can help with weight loss.
I haven’t tried using essential oil except in the diffuser. After reading this, I might try to take your advice, specially the weather is getting cold these days, I think Thieves essential oils will help me with that.
Hey Mina,
Yes, essential oils can really help with weight loss. However, it isn’t the reason most people opt to use Thieves. Mostly, for its immune system boosting and ability to kill bacteria and germs.
My wife loves the products from Young Living, so she will be over the moon to hear how to create these blends for a fraction of the price!
Also, cool story about how thieves blend got its name, never knew that and neither did my wife!
Hey Jurgen,
Young Living does create high-quality essential oils. However, I haven’t ever understood why they use an MLM business model and inflate the prices of their essential oils.
However, making your own blend is a much better idea. You can make so much more and spend your money on other things you want, too.
Love the story about how Theives blend got its name! I’ve never heard that before…
My wife as a glass of Lemon Water every morning, with fresh squeezed Lemon to help her feel full and start the day strong, so I’m glad to read that you too believe that lemon essential oil has weight loss properties.
And finally, appreciative for sharing the recipe to make the oils, at a fraction of the cost to purchase!
Hey Brad,
Consuming a lemon a day is great for your health. I actually recall Dr. Axe stating it’s one of the best things you can do daily to benefit your health.
I must say that I like to use natural remedies but I have never had experiences with essential oils. This recipe seems to be very beneficial for our health and what I especially like is that it can affect weight loss. I will make this for my mom because she has problems with weight but also with her respiratory system.
Hey Daniel,
Have fun making it. Using Thieves is a great way to help with respiratory issues.
I love essential oils and agree that Young Living is on the pricey side. I’ve heard of NOW and Plant Guru but not the others you mention so I’ll have to check them out. Are they all roughly the same price and is there one or two brands you’d recommend over those you mention? I have never heard of essential oils used as weight loss aids so that’s very interesting! I’m glad that you mention not applying essential oils directly on the skin because too many people don’t realize that they can cause an allergic reaction and/or skin irritation if they aren’t diluted. All natural doesn’t mean 100% safe!
Hey Lynn,
You are correct Young Living’s essential oils certainly are on the pricey side. But they are high-quality essential oils.
No actually, the price is much different depending on which company you buy from. Some of the companies sell them for dirt cheap, but they have been adulterated or are actually synthetic essential oils. Also, look out for the words “fragrance” because these actually are not really essential oils.
It’s important to make sure you always mix them with a carrier oils. If you don’t mix them with a carrier oil it’s called “neat”. You need to make sure you do a skin patch test when using them on the skin. You could end up having a reaction to them. It’s recommended that you do a 3-5% dilution. However, with Thieves, because it’s so strong it’s recommended to use them at 1% dilution.
Hi, thanks for such great information. I have never been involved in using these oils, even though my daughter is always teling me how great they are. I like that you include recipes for different ailments. If you make a batch how long does it last before spoiling? I would like to make enough for a month or two of use but not sure that would be safe. And where would you get the bottle and tubes? I am definitely going to give these oils a try and see if I have relief with joint pain at all.
Hey Mary,
Essential oils that contain phenols can last 3 years. However, as a rule of thumb for the Thieves blend I would say it’s good for 3-5 years. You can simply double the life of your essential oils by putting them in a dark amber glass bottle and store them in the refrigerator. Just putting them in the refrigerator helps double their lifespan. This is something not a lot of people do, though.
Personally, I like to clean my own old essential oil bottles out and reuse them for my blends. I use them for my own homemade Thieves blend. But, you can purchase them off Amazon, too.
Here is a link where you can buy them.
